The Vedas, which are the world's oldest surviving scriptures, originated over some 3500 years ago. They contain hymns composed by sages after they had strong religious experiences, and praised gods and goddesses. There are four Vedas: Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda and they were learnt by future generations by listening and repeating.
The Rigveda is the oldest of the Vedas. It has many prayers for the betterment of cattle, horses that were used in battles, and children (especially boys).
